What is EMDR?

One of the modalities I can provide to my clients is EMDR therapy--but what the heck is EMDR? Who does it benefit?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a type of therapy that has been extensively researched as a method that can provide lasting healing to concerns such as trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and depression. With eye movements or bilateral stimulation (tapping), clients briefly and simultaneously focus on their trauma to reduce the intensity of the associated emotions. With EMDR, unlike traditional talk therapy, clients are able to go into less detail in order to engage in this treatment style, and instead allow the brain to naturally process. EMDR treatment can also be successful in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy.

For further research into understanding EMDR, I encourage further reading on the site, EMDRIA, or discuss with your mental health therapist to determine if EMDR is a treatment style you might benefit from.
